The past few weeks I have been meeting lots of Portland artist and because of that my wallet has become stuffed with business cards. Just last night alone I collected 15 new cards at an Artists’ Open Studio collective. As both an artist and a student I’m always looking for the most cost effective ways to promote myself and business cards are a great first step in cheap self promotion.
This month only (November) Phoenix Media PDX is running a special where you get 250 Business Cards for FREE. At the time of pick-up, just bring at least 5 non-perishable food items, which will be donated to the Oregon Food Bank. A great cause that benefits all who take advantage of this promotion.
I also found some great ideas on the Studio Art Direct Blog to help promote yourself in the current economic climate we are in.
Yesterday in DP Class the “Magnificent Seven” got together and recreated, in our own style, this stylized black & white Robert Mapplethorpe photograph. It was amazing how much work went into getting the lighting set to the right angles. It was a true team effort.

Above are some quick thumbnails that I found online, keyword “relaxation”.
For the practicum class, our group is doing the posters for the “Relaxation Station”. The initial idea is for me to compose shots that include candles. I also saw the tea and body movement shots and thought those were interesting also. When I think up ideas for visual projects I always think of words first, words put me in the right frame of mind to hit the shots I need to tell the proper story. Below is a collection of words that I have written down. Feel free to post any comments or other words that might lead me on the right path for this project.
Relax, candle, sun, freedom, warm, fire, no worries, float
The next project on the docket is to shoot a product, easy enough, right? The only thing is, it must be in a cohesive series of three images. The product I have chosen is coffee. My idea is to capture in three different states; roasted whole bean, ground and in liquid form. I have a vision of creating a little set in the studio using different props that are coffee related.
Tomorrow I’m going to walk down the street to the Stumptown Coffee Roasters and get a pound of whole bean coffee and a burlap bag (the type that green coffee is stored in before it’s roasted). Thinking of using the burlap bag like a table cloth.
I like the moody look of these product shots.
